SUCCESS! Thanks for the idea of Safe Mode. I found the app "Power Saving Mode" and sure enough, it was in "Super Mode" so I changed it to "Normal" and the phone righted itself!

Yes the red battery icon outline - and the screen dimming after 5 seconds - is still happening in Safe Mode

It still has 75% battery so it may be Wednesday!

Yes that can be slid up and down ok That's my assumption too, that it is in a mode even if it says that mode is off.
