It is amazing how a phone can be bought in nearly any country in the world as an unlocked GSM unit, and yet here in America we're at the mercy of the big four providers for most smartphones.

I've got the same question. I've written a couple of companies and don't get a factual response. I think it is a chinese OS with an Android looking face.

I've checked into some of these chinese clones and am hesitant to buy something without recourse should it fail to work. Not saying I won't, but without some kind of warranty or return policy, it seems risky to me.

Anybody have experience playing around with Android OS installed on non-major brand phones, the "cheap" made in China clone/phone type of products, (like Sciphone, hiphone, I-Star, Shenzhen, et al.). I ask because I travel a lot and for $100 or so, it seems like a cheap way to keep a backup...

That is pretty cool! A self-winding watch mechanism to charge the phone's battery... very clever!

I was under the impression Archos was updating the "7" with 2.1 for July. Is this no longer happening? Is it possible to upgrade from 1.6 to 2.1 with the "7" you have?
