There is no set frequency at which apps get updated. Every time the internet is switched on, the play store looks for the updates available. If you have turned on your settings to let apps be updated only on Wi-Fi, then, the apps get updated when you switch on Wi-Fi.

You might want to check how much space is being taken up by all the apps provided by Google. Disabling those apps which you do not need/use should help you to reduce the space Google based apps and Google Play services occupy.
