A factory reset or two usually does the trick for me. Go into recovery and clear your cache while you are at it also.
Not only will these help with the missing storage, but some people report it being required for Lollipop to run smoothly. I did not have any luck and went back to 4.4, but best...
Have you tried Developer Options - allow usb debugging? It is a stretch, but sometimes I have to enable that and allow the connection with the popup that follows.
1. I factory reset it. I paid, left and reset while in my car. The rep, as sweet as she was, sped through the setup process and I did not want any extra Verizon syncs happening so I skipped a bunch of things that she quickly accepted. I do not need Verizon contacts and all that jazz.

TC here. Updated info. I reinstalled with WUG. Then I charged to full and factory reset. It is working smooth now. Now Launcher is speedy and I am happy again.
Perhaps I will go the WUG route tomorrow. Saw in another post that Google Now Launcher was causing everything to slow down. Will play with it a bit without that launcher installed first.
Trying to figure out why mine is slow. When everyone updated, did the initial loading logo keep swirling until you had to manually restart the tablet? Also, when you put in your wifi pw, was the word "password" on two lines?
