I see. It's a good deal for me because I use normal text messaging and I'm on WiFi most of the time. Text messaging is another $20, which makes the plan $90 a month before tax. The savings for me is about $720 over 24 months, which is a better deal for me than doing what you're talking about...

I see that there was an update for the T-Mobile Moto X today. One of the updates says that it "Fixed choppy audio issue during voice calls." Can anyone with T-Mobile having the problem confirm that it is fixed now?

The Moto X does not have Wi-Fi calling. As far as I'm aware, T-Mobile is the only carrier that offers it, but they don't offer it with the Moto X.

It didn't work for me. However, the call quality did seem to improve. I'm not sure if it was a placebo effect, though.
