I had a similar issue, with a new LG G2 and a JVC KD-HDR71BT head unit. Check in the phone BT settings: Visibility timeout should be set to Never. This solved the intermittent connectivity. It improved the music tag info being sent to the head unit, although I would say this is solved...

Just had this same problem when backing up my Nexus 4 before rooting. Do you have any apps currently running on the phone that affect the screen filtering properties? That was the issue that I found here...
