Wow - quick reply... I'm in the habit of closing all apps before I close my phone. Thanks though. Also, I get very few texts - maybe one a week on average, so relatively speaking I hardly ever open the app.

Why does the app open automatically when I unlock my phone using the fingerprint scanner? It happens about 1/2 the time. Pixel 3a here, btw.
