I know this is going to sound strange but it worked on my S3. Try downloading the file to the phone without it being in the download mode. It worked for me when mine appeared to be bricked and I was only getting the same screen you are.

This is one of those times that I hope my wasted day saves someone else some time. LOL

Not sure why this worked but, as a last resort, I used Odin to download the tar without the phone being in download mode. That brought it somewhat back to life (lots of errors as it was booting) so I got into recovery mode and did a factory wipe/restore and now everything is good.

Unfortunately the new download did not work either. Tried a different tar file with same results.

Thanks. I plan on re-rooting. I was going this route as it seemed the easiest to take care of the OTA update to 4.3 as that was failing and re-downloading. Currently I am trying again on the new download but it seems to be having the same result. Maybe I will just let it sit for awhile.

I am trying to unroot using this method and Odin seems to hang during "system.img.ext4". Because I stopped it I can now only get into the download mode (Kies error on anyhting else). I am currently downloading the zip again but was wondering if you had any other suggestions. I am on 4.1.2...
