I may have just discovered that if I have a music-playing app (Music Folder Player Full) open (even if not playing music), then I don't get the slideshow. There might be other apps that block the slideshow from appearing...?

Yeah. "Water Resistant: can withstand submersion at a depth of n metres for m minutes". That's pretty explicit about what it can tolerate, and nicely avoids the "proof" vs. "resistant" red herring.
