And as soon as I typed this, I figured it out!! Instead of clicking on the photo to open it up, I long pressed the text itself. (text and photo) I was given options including "save attachment". When I chose that it showed up in my photo gallery!

I changed a setting to hide sensitive notification content so that helped a little. I guess I just have to get used to seeing if the notification light is blinking. I didn't have that on Windows Phone so I was used to checking the lock screen for new emails. Just have to change the way I do things.

I found them in messaging. I clicked on the new message icon and got a people icon. When I tapped the people icon my list was there to choose someone. But I still can't find that option in my phone app.
