All: I just downloaded and installed Maps 5.6.0 from the Market and my first impression is that this fixed the problem. Thanks Google! :D

I'm really hoping it is a Google Maps issue and can just be fixed through an update to Maps in the Market. If we have to wait on Verizon and Motorola to sign off on an OTA update to the operating system we could be waiting for a while.

Just found a link to a discussion of this issue on the Google Help Forums stating that the engineers are aware of the issue: Orientation reversed in compass mode - Google Mobile Help Hopefully we get a fix soon!
