Try leankernel... Its very 'snappy' and has a lot of uneeded things stripped out of the kernel. My best advice to you is just make a backup of your current ROM and flash all the kernels that catch your eye. That's pretty much the only way you'll find out what is best for your device. What works...

Well the nexus is the superior phone without a doubt in both hardware and software. I know people are having data issues with the nexus but this has happened with every lte device when Verizon first launches it but gets straightened out in the near future. Not to mention like previously stated...

That's a good way to absolutely slaughter a great looking UI. Not sure why anyone would even think about doing that. Pretty much defeats the whole purpose of a Nexus. Tell him to buy a Razr, it'll get ICS with that crap blur on top of it.

You DO NOT need root access in your current firmware to flash a custom recovery. All you have to do is "fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxxxx.img" and you'll have your custom recovery image. So go ahead and flash it, you'll be 110% fine.
