This is a little off-topic for Android, but you can get Google Apps Sync for Outlook. My company uses Google Apps, but I hate doing work email in the google webmail interface. Google Apps Sync made Outlook palatable.

I disable all the carrier bloatware, for one. Services running in the background aren't a problem unless they are coded poorly; newer versions of Android handle background processes much better than the early versions.

Have you tried pasting in a second or so of blank sound at the end of your personal ringtone? You'll get a pause after the sound that way...

Got it on my 2012 Nexus 7 yesterday. I wouldn't recommend accepting the OTA update for this device--either flash it for a clean image or stick to Kit Kat. I'm getting lots of lag and unresponsive apps.
