I used that when I had the same problem from reverting back to 2.1 a few weeks ago. Worked great. I never rooted my phone until this happened. After a few days of searching all over the internet, this sounded like the only fix for the orientation problem. It was super easy to do.

I've noticed that too. When I get an email and open it through the status menu, Gmail doesn't pop up on the home button. But the icon is there when checking email through the Gmail app.
