Of course, got the answer to this question over on xda-developers RIGHT after I hit submit here. The solution is to open port 14259. The xda responder give the ip of 74.125.142.192 if you really need to tighten down the firewall. Hope this helps someone!

If I try to use Google Now's voice search on the wifi at work, all I get after it listens to me speak is "Recognizing..." for about 5-10 seconds, then it just goes back to "Tap mic to start speaking." If I do this on cellular data, or my wifi at home, Google Now works fine, which makes me think...
