Update on this: I had a new phone delivered which works perfectly. It seemed a very odd fault and I'm now nervous to play around with the in-call volume on the new one in case it stops working!

Sorry my last reply did not post properly.I have since spoken to Motorola who talked me through the safe mode, but it did not work. As it seems so simple, I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but the retailer (john lewis) has agreed to replace it anyway.

Many thanks for the replies. I didn't realise there were different ways of receiving emails and I was concerned that if it was constantly syncing it would have an adverse effect on battery life. I assume that push type email apps do not impact on battery usage too much?

I've had the X Play for a few weeks, but I cannot find how to change the sync frequency for e-mail, both gmail and yahoo. In all previous phones nexus 4, G2 and G3 it's been simple process through Accounts. I assume I'm just being stupid and it's something simple, but could someone please advise...
