The cords worked! In fact the provided adapter from VW worked too that originally did not. Apparently I had to reset the car's radio unit to its factory settings, and only then did it fully recognize my phone. So for anyone else who find themselves in a similar vote, reset your radios first...

Yes indeed. I ordered 2 more cables from Amazon to see if they would work, linked below, and should find out tomorrow. Also going to try my wife's Pixel 3a with a USB c to USB c so I'm hoping at least one of those works. Just wasn't sure if there was a recommended brand as recognized by android...
