how do i put the phone into debugging mode if it is bricked?

My husband bricked his phone when trying to do a software update it said that it would take ten minutes for the installation but after bout 2 minutes the phone turned off and went into reboot but didnt fully reboot it went to Emergency Mode!! yellow screen i have been doin some searching around...
