Bye bye stock 2.3.6, hello Unnamed Rom

Thanks, Entropy. That is what I do - "restore missing apps with data," and never system apps. I got a bit sloppy there. I guess the OP's phone is not trying to leave the room, since we have not heard from him/her again. ;)

is it possible to make the update notification go away?

Two ways to do this: > Root, install Titanium Backup, and freeze "device management." Reboot. > Root, install TiBu, delete "device management." Reboot. Or, you can root and install a custom rom and then do the above. "My Backup Pro" will also do this, but only if you are rooted.

Yes, you can flash any rom after the ota update and the phone will revert to whatever android version the rom is based on, loaded by the rom when you flash it. I recommend downloading the Odin file listed in 2c and keeping it handy, since it is life insurance in case you ever get into trouble...

Bye bye stock 2.3.6, hello Unnamed Rom

Yes, but you can then use CWM to do it, since you have CWM through the kernel in UnNamed (or, if you did not flash UnNamed, you have it from the original kernel flash through Mobile Odin). Or, you can flash again through Mobile Odin.

Bye bye stock 2.3.6, hello Unnamed Rom

After you are rooted, the easiest way to install CWM is to flash a kernel that contains CWM, like Entropy's kernels, found here . Download the kernel to your computer, load it onto the root of your sd by using usb debugging mode, then flash it with the Mobile Odin app, obtained free on Market...

Wifi connectivity issues after 2.3.6 update

And there's the obvious - be sure to check and see if mac filtering is enabled on the router, and either disable it or check to make sure that the mac address for your i-777 is entered correctly.

When you flash the UnNamed rom, be sure to do a "wipe date/factory reset" as part of the flashing process through CWM ( do NOT use Rom Manager). I would also suggest flashing Entropy's Daily Driver kernel 1/2/2012 from here . The wifi connectivity issue is a well-known problem with 2.3.6...

GPS location kinda sucks after update!

I am running UnNamed rom, but have used GPS Aids app for awhile now. Outside, I get a lock in 5-10 seconds; inside, 20-30 seconds. Also, some comments on this issue at xda here .

    Battery drain with new update

Honestly, I think most folks on this forum would be very happy with 24-30 hours on a single charge. Why not just plug the phone in when you go to bed, and be done with it?

    Battery drain with new update

You will need to re-enter the password for your wi-fi system - you lost it during the flash. After going to settings/wi-fi/turn on wi-fi, you will need to long-press on the name of your network at the bottom of the screen, and a dialogue will pop up asking for the password. I used his...

Bye bye stock 2.3.6, hello Unnamed Rom

Here's the guide to rooting and flashing a custom kernel without the triangle and upping the counter. Here's UnNamed . I recommend using the Odin one-click to rooted stock method, #2c. This is a great piece of software just to keep on the laptop, since you have the security of knowing you...

    Battery drain with new update

Eh - that's how I learned about Android. Someone said something that I did not quite understand, I googled it, read a bit, and then understood. For my part, I am just glad Entropy joined AC, and is willing to post over here. He is on the cutting edge of development for the i-777, and I always...
