Well I don't know how you get it but Daniel Bader does the S8 has some clues on if it will work with Daydream? Does it has the Daydream app installed? if not, have you tried the device in a Daydream Headset and installing the app?

The problem also to handle the screen underwater is that the technology needed to recognize the fingers under water isn't available right now, maybe being wet but I don't think underwater

I think newer is always better because of timeproof, an older device will become obsolete if any update requires newer hardware.
