I leave it off most of the time but use an app called AOD on Charge to have it turn on when on a charger, so I can easily see what my charging battery level is at. It's not something I need on all the time anyway since I have a Gear S3 on my wrist.

Hmm, it could be the watch. When at work it is on my wrist and connected to the phone, but at home, the watch is usually on its charger and not interacting with the phone at that point, hence why maybe I don't see this behavior at home.

This. Nova just adds extra layers of customization and convenience. I can rename/change icons, I can overlap widgets if need be, I can change the app drawer to scroll vertically instead of horizontally. So much more can be done with Nova that I cant use anything else.
