Yes, the default launcher is still there. You can even just go to Settings > Applications, then find your launcher app, go into it and "Clear Defaults". Then when you press home you will be asked to select a default home app. But the Home Switcher app is also useful.

Thanks a million, at least now I know it's only a software issue and can be resolved. If I do a fresh installation of cyanogen or some other mod would that flash the radio.img? Or maybe I just have to stick with froyo till cyanogen does a 2.2 mod? Cause the chances of me finding the right file...

I had this same problem, phoned up HTC and they sent out a new pair straight away, no questions asked. It must be a common bug. Same thing happened with my old HTC Hero ones (which are the exact same but white).
