as a follow up, i tried re-rooting the phone today. used odin to flash the cwm? or cwa whatever it is recovery, then installed superuser zip from internal sd card. worked fine??? no issue. phone is rooted properly. i have NO idea what i did wrong the first time.

ok that finished, and for whatever went totally wrong, everything is fixed now. god forbid, please dont try and root 4.1.2! its 4am now, i have to be up at 7am. ugh

argh. ok i think ive narrowed the problem down. for whatever reason my computer (win 7 64bit) does NOT like installing "base system device" drive, as well as mtp device driver. both of these fail. anyways i plugged in my mother s4 and it installed all drivers fine. tried my s3. no go. mind...
