Just done a google search and found a possible solution - Go to face unlock settings in secirity and turn off smart lock screen notifications. Now when I lift the phone in front of my face the lock screen is automatically unlocked which is a bonus (should have tried that before) and I am hoping...

My new P20 pro also doesn't show any notifications even though everything is enabled in notification management !! The only way to know if I have an unread notification is to unlock the screen which is a pain. I have ordered a smart cover case to see if that helps.
