Yes, the LG ones are bad. A solution from holysky in my thread (sorry, didn't see yours before posting) is settings (general) > accessibility > vision > high contrast. It's exactly what I was looking for. You can apply a wallpaper after the fact.

I have Cortana set as my default assistant, but the dedicated assistant button isn't doing anything. My assumption is that switching away from Google deactivated the button.
