Mine still works after flashing that Kernel, but I haven't tried restoring back to stock. If it comes to it, you can always RUU back to stock and then re root. Disclaimer: this is my first Android as well.

To load a kernal you don't do the wipe data/factory reset. You do need to clear the two other wipes,both cache and delvak cache, or whatever its called. If you did the factory reset than you need to flash a rom ,or restore and than reflash the kernal. I did this for the first time yesterday...
