Get Winzip, an utility (program) that will extract the file for you. The .tar.gz extension is a type of file compression. I didn't know what it was a few days ago, either. Definitely a learning process!

Unfortunately, you can't make shortcuts with the stock B&N ROM. It's something to do with the way it's coded in the ROM or something...too complex for my non-IT brain, anyway. Nonetheless, it's a known limitation and to my understanding there's no way around if you're using the stock ROM.
