I tried both methods and the tablet would not boot into safe mode.

I have a samsung tab s6 and the display will not turn off when the power button is selected. It goes to the lock screen and the display stays on. However, it will turn off if the usb port is attached to a power source. Maybe its a coincidence, but a "Usb connector connected/disconnected"...
