At the end it didn't require changing the USB cable; simple Developer and MTP enabled and USB debugging (was somehow enabled) disabled , it started working..and now connects to Android Auto everytime I hook up the phone! Thank you mates for your responses.

Yes, I am using the same USB cable that came with my Note 5 (on T-Mobile); I am running MM as well and the USB connection is set to MTP. It worked once and stopped working afterwards. Perhaps the cable issue? I have ordered an USB C compatible cable from Amazon. Will keep trying.

I tried connecting my Samsung Note 5 with Android Auto installed to my 2016 Honda Accord EX; it connected successfully once but haven't been able to reconnect and I am kind of getting frustrated. :( Any help will be much appreciated.
