I can't seem to stick with any keyboard other than the stock keyboard. Others have all been so buggy for me and the stock keyboard actually works very well for me - and Google's swipe is v great actually

That is so annoying - I've actually never thought about how annoying it can be if you can't control how an individual app/service makes noises on your phone. I've had a similar issue when I'm listening to music and random constant notifications will dull my music volume.

Reboot, clear data, and reinstall is usually the order I take for debugging weird issues such as this. Thankfully everything's backed up and synced if you've logged in with a Google Account into Chrome

In general I've felt like compared to other phones that I've had, the Nexus 6P, has been heating up way more frequently and more intensely. I've owned a Nexus 4 and Nexus 6 before and I didn't feel like the heat was a problem for me.
