I was having the same issue and eventually just unlocked the bootloader and loaded a newer radio. (Im using the 21 one i believe) and the issue completely went away and i get much much better reception. And it's stable.

It has nothing to do with t-mobile not having the iphone. When the verdict came out recently and you took away the damages for the samsung phones on t-mobile and for the duration of sprint not having the iphone, the damages went down over 700 Million dollars. Like the others posted. There is more than one way to use maps underground. When i travel the subway in chicago, it uses the cell sites for location and don't have too much trouble using maps. It's not gps but does give you appx location and is good enough for foursquare/fb/etc checkins.

I use t-mobile in the chicago area and don't have much issue with them. I get 4-6.5Mb/s on my hd2 and slightly faster on my dell streak 7 with hspa+. Ping times around 50ms or so. Constant speeds. The 3g and 4g network doesn't really go past the outer suburbs though. Once you go west of plano...
