Can I just use a gender changer plug to hook up to usb, using my existing micro usb cable To hook up external stoarge to my nexus 7 instead of a USB otg cable? Is there something else unique about the otg cable?

I've been using MX Player to play videos - mp4's, since the stock player doesn't always play my mp4's. But the video quality of the MX Player leaves a lot to be desired. There seems to be a lot of pixelation, though the same files look great on my computer. Is there something i'm missing here...
