Figured out a solution...after many many many failed attempts I wiped the phone and installed CM 12.1 and it works with the head unit and Android auto's volume is working correctly. Still on TMO baseband DOK2 firmware. Soooo if all else fails just root your phone and I install cyanogenmod 12.1
