I got notification of update, clicked download and install, next thing you know it sent me back to screen saying I am already up-to-date... I've tried rebooting, checking in, everything - won't give it to me :(

IMO I would accept their refurbished unit and call it a day. Not worth the hassle of doing it any other way, and chances are they will send you a brand new unit. Think about it for a second. Do you seriously think they have refurbished units laying around of a device that has only been on...

And this I think is the wrong way to do it, priority mode should silence all apps not just calls/sms.

Because silent mode still has audible alarm, "none" setting for notifications silences the alarm also. I believe this is the only difference.

I don't believe the point is to stop notifications, the point is to stop alerts. Your phone still gets notifications. The only way to stop notifications II believe is on a per-app basis in the settings. I am not aware of any way to stop your phone from getting all notifications globally.
