A simple and easy fix would be to make sure you at least have ClockWork recovery, if you do I would simply just flash a rom. They all have root built in. Seems your missing the su in /system/xbin all roms will have this included.

You hit the power button. No biggie and no need to downgrade. Simply just hit the power button again. On the 2.xxx recoveries it went to a black/blank screen and people would freak. Now the screen still displays.
