I am having exactly the same issue with my s4. Any idea as how to solve this?.. its annoying as I use skype on a daily basis. No option for loudspeaker communication .. hmm. My iPhone 5 has no issues with this. Any thoughts??

Yes, it does lag out of box. More you use it, more noticeable it is. The lagging can be really annoying sometimes. Will try the Nova Launcher and report ..
