I don't see a way out for a good stock dialer unless you're ready to factory reset back, or root and get a custom ROM. I'm with you guys: I choose apps based on whether I can have them dark. When I was looking at Play store dialers before deciding the stock 4.3 was best, Dialer One (Russian)...
