Yep, found that after I posted the question, but it seems as if the contacts are still on the phone--just not "viewed" if you select not to view them. And the "linked" status is still there in the details of each specific contact.

My Eris just updated to 2.1 (I was going to do it manually, but this morning it told me that an update was available and it did the official OTA process). Anyway, the official OTA process doesn't ask you how you want your email and contacts synced... apparently using the account info already on...

Actually, my bad. Adjusting the volume up/down controls all the sounds EXCEPT the alarm. That is only adjustable by hitting the volume buttons when in the alarm-setting screen. So you can quiet your phone without muting the alarm. Sweet :)
