In my experience when doing a firmware check, profile update, or prl update it will kill the wifi connection. I believe it needs to do that as those three update packages need to be handled OTA by the cellular network. Especially the prl update. I'm not aware of any way that any of those updates...

Rukin- I'm in the same boat you are. I'm currently at 2.2.2 and patiently waiting for the OTA Gingerbread update to show up. It says you are up to date because they haven't pushed Gingerbread to your phone yet. Just be patient. It will be here soon enough. :) -droid_filter

Nete- You are correct, it is eating away at the battery life. However, you could always put the phone in Airplane Mode which will kill the radio signal and most likely prolong the battery quite a bit. Hope this helps. -droid_filter
