With your budget youre STUCK with a Nexus 5, because for school, a laptop is far more important. Here's my setup, Im a student as well (I also took all my lecture notes with paper and pen). Phone (BBZ10), Tablet (Nexus 7), Laptop (Macbook). FYI, I the nexus 7 is the least used of all

With all its software/hardware optimizations, I think that it will be one of the best functioning 2 year old phones around

$40/12 (months in a year) = ~$3.30 a month for an upgraded phone. Worth it IMO

The material of the back doesnt matter to me, its the overall feel of the phone. the sgs4, y'know, feels okay

if you use it 15 mins a day you dont need a note II or an iphone. You could probably get by with a flip phone. seriously
