You should be able to go to menu -> settings -> accounts & sync and turn off only the syncing for the Backup Assistant.

Pushing the top button should just lock the screen, unless you hold it down long enough for a menu to pop up asking if you want to shut down. If the button is unresponsive, try readjusting the battery door.

I agree wholeheartedlt. I got the 2750 mAh extended battery from Verizon so I wouldn't have to compromise.
