The functionality is there if you use Hangouts for SMS. I know that's a bit of a pain for some people, but I consider it worthwhile to have full Google Voice integration as well as Wifi calling on Verizon.

On the first day, I noticed my Active Display on my Moto X knockoff was constantly flaring up with the watch, but I haven't seen that happen nor a change in battery life. The actual watch face itself has been the biggest battery factor for me so far, even larger than ambient face.

That's intentional. Think old television screens when they were turned off. I thought that was a very neat touch.
