i'm learning comp sci right now after finishing my math major. the math involved is fairly low level logic and linear algebra.

the signal won't be better unless the radios get updated. this doesn't happen with the released source code.

...you are aware that the cdma gnex does have radio updates that haven't reached the rom community yet. the kernel source isn't up on the AOSP page.
