Sorted! Turned out it was a Google App update that turned the icons black instead of white. Uninstalled and reinstalled the updates sorted it.

Yes, same.

No swiping down doesn't make it reappear, I just the pull down list of settings, the clock etc. The notifications are there but in a list not in the status bar. Interestingly when its on charge the lightning bolt from the battery indicator shows, screenshot attached.

Hope these have attached ok! You can see the empty notification area at the top of the Home pages. Fire up Chrome, or any other App that doesn't overwrite the whole screen, and they appear. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the reply. Yes Device has been rebooted. The "old" version that has been installed is 2.18.248 so not that old. This version does support backup to Drive but it isn't working. This could almost be another thread in its own right, but part of the restore process I mentioned above...
