I'm going to guess it has a lot more to do with how much they get from the ads than anything else. If it's an app that shows ads often then the developer will get more than if it's an app that usually works in the background and rarely shows ads.

Same here. Tasker by far. In fact, there are several paid apps I have where the only reason I bought them was to use them with Tasker. If you took advantage of the KitKat promotion and use Google Opinion Rewards then you can get quite few paid apps for free.

It depends on how much you use it, how bright you have the screen and how many features you have turned on that work while the phone is asleep. According to GSam, since July 26th I've averaged 24 hours of total time with 7 hours and 43 minutes "Active" and 2 hours and 16 minutes of screen on time.
