I am pretty sure it's hardware or software at a low level. I could not ever un-stick my watch and always needed to restart the watch for it to begin tracking right. The last time it stopped working, I had to restart the watch twice, and even then, it took 2 or 3 minutes to start working again...

I've had to change my opinion. In one week's time, the watch went from having rock-solid HR to first requiring a restart every 2-3 days, to daily, to every few hours this AM. I've decided to return my watch.

My wrists are about 8", which is the last hole on the strap. I ordered a strap from Amazon that claims that wrists of 8.3" can be worn with the strap. If their measurements are correct-Fits 170mm - 215mm wrists. (Not recommended for small wrist)-then it should work for me. Will let you all know.

No, that doesn't work for me, either. gmail does not appear as a battry-optimized app on my Sprint S8. gmail does not appear on the list of 'sleeping apps' gmail does not appear to be addable using the 'Unmonitored Apps' dialogue, either. I do suspect that this is a power-saving issue...
