    Ok thanks to all. Did some more testing and looks like it only happens on a power up start not on a soft start. Will welcome any suggestions but I guess will have to live with it for now.

    No, I disabled the gmail app. Also just FYI, I disabled push services. I did just notice something. If I shutdown or run out of battery, it syncs right after power on without opening the mail app or being prompted for a manual sync. Is there a way of stopping the auto sync on power up?

    Nothing stands out. I log on with FP recognition and the number of received e-mails are displayed. I upgraded from a Tab2 running 4.1 never had this issue. Even when opening the app it would wait for manual sync command.
