Thanks for the idea. I found the problem, my fault. Had the cable plugged into a charger instead of a computer. Now it all works. I'll chalk this one up to old age.

I used to be able to direct connect with a USB using my Note 8 to see files and folders. Now, my Note20 refuses to connect. Using USB 3.0 cable, short length to machine. Now all I get is battery charging. Here's what I done to attempt to fix the problem (each time rebooting the phone): 1)...
