I think it's due to the different thermal expansion rates between metal ang glass, causing the edge of the glass to show. As with optic cables, light concentrates at the edges. If this theory holds true, Samsung could have blacked out the edges of the glass.

And even if we got initially good units, will they hold over time, heat, and constant bending?

It might also be downloaded apps (or updates) that keep on running in the background. Specially ones that use the wifi or mobile data. I tried returning my device to factory settings and it seemed to solve the same problem with my phone. I never figured out which one it is but I didn't...
