an app called Notification Toggle will help with this. This was the ONLY thing I missed about my S3. I miss it no more. You can also configure it to show the battery percentage in the notification bar.

This is true, but that doesn't seem to be what the OP is looking for. To the OP: I use Notification Toggle and it does the job well - it even allows you to add shortcuts to your own apps.
